Summer Flying
Warm Weather Reminders
It is that time of year where in some places temperatures will be rising and we need to help keep our planes as cool as possible
While some of this information may be reminders, some might be new information.
Taking Care of yourself
- Remember to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated during the day.
- Avoid eating heavy foods that can drain your energy. Fruit and vegetables help keep you energized.
- Pack healthy snacks such as energy bars, granola bars, etc.
Warm Weather Conditions
Use the weather curtain before and after passenger boarding and deplaning to help maintain a comfortable cabin environment. By doing this, we can reduce the temperature by up to 10 degrees.
Ground Cabin Temperature
- Use the Warm Weather Announcement to ensure passengers help by closing window shades and opening air gaspers.
- Inform the Flight Deck if the cabin feels warm and ask what the temperature is in the cabin prior to boarding. Pilots have specific guidelines that they have to follow to ensure a comfortable cabin prior to boarding.
- If the APU is deferred, ask the Captain how long the taxi will be and ensure that the cabin is cool enough to last for the taxi.
- If the cabin is warm, advise passengers to keep their window shades closed until takeoff, this will keep the aircraft cabin warm.
- If a passenger complains about the temperature or feeling ill, give them a glass of water, a cool galley wipe, and ensure that their air gasper is fully open. Apologize and make sure to fill out a Flight Incident Report for this situation.
In-flight Cabin Temperature
- If the cabin temperature is warm, contact the flight deck (don’t break sterile flight deck unless there is an emergency). Wait 5 or 10 minutes and gauge the temperature again by asking passengers. If a passenger becomes ill, offer a cool galley wipe, glass of water, ensure air gaspers are open, and inform the flight deck. Remember to fill out a Flight Incident Report to document that the cabin temperature contributed to the passenger becoming ill.
- Remember to always inform the flight deck of any uncomfortable cabin temperature and if warranted, fill out a Flight Incident Report to document any passenger incidents.
Cabin Temperature & Your Authority to Act
If the cabin temperature feels unsafe prior to boarding, you have the authority to call a Safety Timeout. Your safety—and the safety of your fellow crew members and passengers—comes first.
What that looks like:
- Slow down the operation
- Talk about and address the concern and ensure the issue is corrected
- Operational reset once conditions are corrected and it is safe
- Prepare to report the issue using the correct reporting method (ASAP, FIR, OJI, Fatigue)
Taking Action
Do not hesitate to speak directly with the Captain to determine whether the aircraft is safe to board given the cabin temperature. This is a shared safety responsibility, and your input matters.
Keeping others informed can also help support a coordinated response. Notifying the appropriate teams (such as through a Flight Family message) ensures everyone is aligned while the situation is being evaluated.
Bottom line
If something doesn’t feel safe, trust that instinct and take action
