Government Shutdown

Overview

The 2025 United States federal government shutdown began when Congress failed to pass new appropriations legislation, leading to a lapse in funding for many federal agencies. This is now the longest shutdown in U.S. history.
As a result:

  • Some federal workers are furloughed (i.e., temporarily laid off) and others deemed “essential” are working without pay.
  • Key oversight, training, inspection and administrative functions have been suspended or scaled back in many agencies.

Impact on Aviation

The FAA has mandated a 10% nationwide reduction in scheduled flights as the ongoing government shutdown strains the U.S. airspace system. With thousands of air traffic controllers, safety inspectors, and technical staff working without pay, the agency cited unsustainable staffing levels and safety concerns as the reason for the cuts. The order affects about 40 major airports, forcing airlines to trim schedules, consolidate routes, and delay or cancel flights. The move underscores how the shutdown is directly impacting aviation workers and passengers alike—stretching crews thin, disrupting travel plans, and highlighting that a safe and efficient national air system cannot function without a fully funded government.
